Family guy: The Twilight Zone

So the assignment chosen for this blog is called “Teezee Reference” and the goal here is to find an audio clip of a show or movie outside of the twilight zone. I choose an episode of family guy called “Wasted Talent” focusing on the last scene was the key, it was a parody based on an episode of the twilight zone called “Time enough at last”.

From the original episode of the twilight zone the story summed up is about a quote-unquote  man who seeks salvation in the rubble of a ruined world and tells of Henry Bemis, played by Burgess Meredith, who loves books yet is surrounded by those who would prevent him from reading them.  Family guy does a parody of this episode where quote-unquote “Peter is so drunk that he cannot even find the piano. Lois has to turn him around to face the piano, then move him over a couple of inches to play in the correct key. Peter and Lois win first place, but Lois frets that she may have harmed his health for her own selfish need to win. Peter defensively tells her all of his brain cells are intact. There is one left, and it realizes that it is the only cell in the brain. He can finally read all of his books; he then bends down and breaks his glasses, exclaiming “That’s not fair! It’s not fair! There was time now!”” source: wikipedia

Audacity tutorial: Song Mash ups and exporting audio files in Mp3 format.

In this tutorial I will briefly explain how to make a song mash up using audacity.  Let’s begin by making a basic mash up that requires only two songs.

Now what we will need is an instrumental of choice as well as an acapella.  For those who don’t know, an acapella is the vocals of a song without the instrumental.  Now the idea here is to use an acapella over an instrumental. From here you may be creative, in addition, the instrumental and acapella may be of your choosing.  This does not necessarily have to be the proper instrumental of the acapella that you are choosing.

For saving finished mash up projects etc. You must follow the make sure you finalized any editing to your audio file.  To begin with, in order to save the finished audio file into an mp3.

Step: 1) Click on “file” at the top left corner of the menu tab, then scroll down and click “export selection”. (Click to enlarge the image below)

Step: 2) Once the finder menu box comes up, refer to the screenshot below.  In addition, make sure that Mp3 files is selected.  You may also save this mp3 file to whatever destination you want, desktop, documents etc.

Step: 3) Click save, if you saved this mp3 file to your desktop it should be there.

The Music mash up hotline!

So this next assignment I choose to do requires a clip from any chosen 6 songs to be combined into an mp3 track. I actually did 7 instead but anyway, someone must then guess the songs being in this combined track. It may be difficult for many to guess at songs may be playing so I made things a bit more easier by choosing well known artists and using clips of the chorus part of the song.

Below are photos of the artists in this audio clip in order of played.

Music Mashup

So this next assignment is a music mashup.  Using the program called audacity I’ve decided to combine two songs that I thought would go well with each other.  “Under your spell” by Desire & “Nas It ain’t hard to tell”.  In addition, I used an acapella version of the song It ain’t hard to tell by Nas, then added another song, Under your spell.  Moreover, i did a few editing here.

I find using audacity more comfortable for me then using pro tools.  Plus I couldn’t find a trial download of the program on the web and I can download the full audacity program for free.   But anyway this mashup was quite difficult putting together at first, so knowing exactly what i wanted to hear from it helped a lot.  I had to shorten on of the songs and change the tempo as well, so it can sync well with each other.  Doing this was hectic at first but I managed to get it the way I wanted it to sound after a few times playing it over.

Energy Crisis!!

The audio assignment I choose to do for this blog post was Flickrsounds.

So questions emerge on whether or not we will have enough oil supply to meet the worlds demand.  Believe it or not the global demand for oil is about 90 million barrels a day!

These three photos I choose to use was a quick way for me to present how this energy shortage will effect us.  The first photo displays an oil rig, and shows how oil is extracted from the ground.  Once oil supply is limited cars as well as a list of other items will have no fuel and will shut down.  Finally the third photo depicts a great depression age of global sadness and chaos.

There is said to only be 30 years left of oil supply, what source of energy will we turn to next?

New York Times Post says less then 50 years of oil supply remains!!

Sound scapes is the name of this audio assignment and I composed a sound piece using only found sounds. This was a bit challenging putting together at first.  I spent quite some time thinking of what real world sounds I could merge together to get the sound that I was looking for.  Also, I’m not very familiar with audacity so that was another issue for me. However, I managed to get close to the sound I was looking for.  A crowded street with traffic and other environmental noises. I was hoping to match how it would sound if an individual were to be standing on the streets of time square Manhattan.

By listening to this clip you may get a sense of how busy and crowded it is at time square.  Time square never sleeps, it is always alive and busy all the time with people everywhere.

The new mini computers

So by now a majority of people may very well own an android phone.  Smartphones are now more advanced then ever.  Some of the many new additions to these mini devices are camera sensors, more apps, larger screens etc.  Smartphones are essentially mini computers as you can do most of what can be done on a desktop or laptop on them.  They are becoming a huge part of many peoples lives and impact society in both positive and negative ways on a daily basis.  It is to the point were some people may not leave their homes without it.  In addition, leaving their home without a phone would be like forgetting to wear shoes!

When you look at things from a perspective, smartphones are destroying our lives! Nobody reads anymore and no one lives in the moment, yet another thing to remember is our social interactions.  How often these days do you see groups of people having coffee or out at dinner with everyone’s faces buried in their phones??

People are forgetting to have social interactions with each other and  that sparks up great conversations!  Perhaps this may be another reason for social anxiety as it can only make things worse.

So me and my partner decided to record outside the admin building, even though it was extremely cold! From these sound clips a variety of noises are presented.  You may hear buses going by and screeching as they make stops.  Also, students chattering as they enter and exit the building.

What surprised me was the sound fluctuation, the H2n recorder we used had a surround sound function.  Which ranged from 2ch and 4ch, also we had a dynamic mic that did not need to be plugged in for power.

Me and my partner had a difficult time trying to figure out how to get the cardioid mic to work with the recorder. We also had to get real close to the sound to be able to hear anything. So we were not really able to get a good recording with the mic outside.

h2n recorder

Above is the H2n recorder which contains a broad spectrum of capabilities;

– 2ch and 4ch surround modes

– Sound can be captured in all directions using both Ms and XY mics.

– The MS mode uses a mic to capture sound.

– Using an external mic works while on XY Stereo mode

When recording with out the external mic we set the mode to 4ch mode ((which records the signals from the MS and XY mics separately.)), we heard everything from both the left and right side; the sound was crisp. The built in mic picked up on sounds from across the street all the way to the school doors.

These diagrams below gives you an idea of how the recording of sound are captured on both XY and MS modes on the zoom h2n.

This mode records in stereo with mics at 90o angles. This allows a natural, deep and accurate sound image to be captured, making it optimal for recording sources nearby.
